Runs Rough or Dies: Auto / Car, Truck Jeep Engine Keeps Dying Repair (1-7)
Some of the reasons car engine keeps dying or running rough are problems in the ignition system, such as faulty plugs, wet or bad plug wires, or moisture inside the distributor cap or around the ignition coil; or problems in the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or PCV valve.

Step 4-1. Checking Car or Auto spark plug wires.
Ifthe engine starts but runs rough, the problem might be faulty spark plugs. First, make sure the plug wires are firmly connected to each plug and to the distributor cap. Check each wire for breaks or burns in the insulation. If the wires look fine, check the plugs.
Step 4-2. Numbering the Car or Auto wires.
Before disconnecting any plug wires, attach tape labels and number each wire near the distributor cap. Numbering the wires ensures that they don’t get mixed up.
Step 4-3. Disconnecting the Car or Auto wires.
The spark plugs are located on the engine block. The wires are attached with boots similar to those on the distributor cap. Don’t pull on the wire—gently twist the boot and pull it from the plug. Use an old paintbrush to brush away any dirt from around the plug so that none can fall into the hole when the plug is removed.
Step 4-4. Removing the Car or Auto plugs.
Use a spark plug socket (it might be 13/16 or 5/8 inch, or 14 or 18 mm, depending on the car). Push the socket over the plug, making sure that the rubber insert inside the socket fits snugly. Now use a socket wrench and extension (a universal joint might be necessary) to loosen the plug. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to free the plug; then remove the plug by hand.
Step 4-5. Checking the Car or Auto plugs.
Examine the plug for cracks or burns in the porcelain. Check to see if the electrodes are burned. The area around the electrodes should be colored tan.
Step 4-6. Finding Car or Auto black plugs.
If the plug is black, it hasn’t been firing. The plug or plug wire might be bad.
Step 4-7. Finding carbon on the Car or Auto plugs.
Ifthe area around the electrodes is covered with black, sooty carbon deposits, the cause might be slow, stop-and-go driving or too rich a fuel mixture due to a sticking choke or clogged air cleaner.
