Runs Rough or Dies: Auto / Car, Truck Jeep Engine Keeps Dying Repair (8-13)
Step 4-8. Finding Car or Auto oily plugs.
Ifthe plug has a wet, oily coating, oil might be leaking past the rings or valve guides. Or the problem might be something as simple as a plugged PCV valve. When in doubt, install new plugs.
Step 4-9. Checking the Car or Auto spark gap.
When installing new plugs or reinstalling the old ones, always check to see if the gap is the width shown in the owner’s manual. Use a wire feeler gauge of the correct size (.030, .035, or .040, for example). The wire should slide between the electrodes smoothly, but you should feel a slight drag.
Step 4-10. Adjusting the Car or Auto gap.
Use the gap adjusting tool on the wire gauge to carefully bend the side electrode to the proper gap. Then recheck the gap.
Step 4-11. Installing Car or Auto spark plugs.
Thread the plug into the hole by hand, being careful not to cross-thread it. Turn the plug clockwise until it is firmly seated in the hole.
Step 4-12. Tightening the Car or Auto plugs.
Slide the spark plug socket over the plug, fit the socket wrench and extension into the socket and tighten the plug one-quarter turn if the plug has a gasket. If the plug has a tapered seat (no gasket), tighten it one-sixteenth of a turn after it has been seated. Reconnect the plug wires by pressing the boot firmly over the spark plug. Be sure to route the wires as they were before you disconnected them.
Step 4-13. Checking and replacing the Car or Auto PCV valve.
The PCV valve is a vacuum-operated valve. It controls the amount of escaped gases from the crankcase that are recycled back into the combustion chamber, where they are reburned. It is usually plugged into the valve cover or the oil filler cap and is attached to a hose. The hose runs to the air cleaner or intake manifold. Simply unplug the PCV valve and shake it. If you don’t hear it rattle, it is bad and needs to be replaced. Pull and twist the old valve from the hose and install a new one. Plug the new valve back in the engine.
A classic example of a clogged fuel filter occurs when the engine acts like its running out of gas, usually at highway speeds. The engine starts normally, runs a mile or so, and then dies again.
