The wheel cylinders are attached to the brake back-plates and operate the brake shoes against the brake drum. Wheel cylinders are sometimes referred to as slave cylinders, being subordinate to the master cylinder.

Fluid enters the wheel cylinder from the brake pipe, being displaced into the wheel cylinder by the action of the master cylinder. The further the brake pedal is depressed the more is displaced and the greater the amount of fluid entering the wheel cylinder. The diagram shows the cross-section of a wheel cylinder. As can be seen, it is an outer cylinder fitted with a piston.

A rubber seal fits into the groove around the piston to give a fluid-tight seal between the piston and the cylinder walls. As the brake fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder the piston is forced outwards by the fluid. Illustrated is the wheel cylinder in the contracted and expanded positions. The expansion is caused by the fluid filling the cylinder.

The amount of travel that the wheel cylinder is allowed is controlled by the wear on the brake linings and the amount of adjustment taken up by the brake adjusters. The wheel cylinder is returned to the contracted position by the springs fitted to the brake shoes. When the brake pedal is returned to the top the springs force back the wheel cylinders and the fluid is returned to the master cylinder.

The wheel cylinder may have one piston, as already shown, or two pistons as shown in the diagrams. The single cylinder is used on twin leading shoe arrangements, the double on leading and trailing shoe arrangements.
