Engine Starter Motor

Posted in Battery, Engine by dodo on the February 17th, 2009

The function of the starter motor is to turn the engine over fast enough to initiate combustion. It does this by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. The starter motor is bolted to the lower rear part of the engine. The main parts of the starter are shown. These are the casing, the armature, the end plates and the driving pinion. The internal construction of the starter is very similar to that of the dynamo.

The teeth of the driving pinion of the starter motor are engaged automatically with those on the flywheel ring gear when the starter motor is switched on. As very heavy cable is needed to transmit the high amperage current from the battery to the starter motor, a solenoid method of switching is used. The dashboard switch operates the solenoid, and the solenoid switches the high amperage current to the starter motor. In other words, the solenoid is a remote-controlled high-amperage switch.

Starter circuit

The starter circuit is shown in the diagram. The solenoid is situated on either the bulkhead or the inner wing. In either case it is near the battery or the starter motor, so that the minimum amount of heavy starter cable type wire is needed.
