If you have ever looked at a motor insurance renewal form you will notice that if you elect to pay the first few pounds of any damage incurred, you will get a considerable reduction in premium. Now motor insurance firms are not benevolent societies and they are aware that the majority of accidents are the small bumps and bangs that usually happen in car parks. If you do elect to pay the first £20 or so of any damage, then this will mean that the money for all these minor bumps and bangs will have to come out of your own pocket.

Alternatively, if you do pay a higher premium and claim every time you get a small scratch, it means that you are constantly paying the highest rate of insurance and you will never enjoy a no claims bonus.

Either way, it means that your motoring is costing you far more money than it should. The only effective way to keep your car free from damage and still remain friends with your bank manager is to do the repairs yourself.

The demand for car body repair products has increased considerably, and not only have the manufacturers made their products easier to use but have also developed entirely new ones.

A few years ago, the only way to fill a dent was to use lead and a blow lamp. Now, chemical body fillers which have the consistency of putty can be ‘wiped in’ to the dent. These fillers set hard in a few minutes and can easily be rubbed down using emery paper.

Painting was once a problem, but now factory matched paints are available in easy to use aerosols. Early chemical rust removers also had their faults. Highly acidic and liquid, they had a tendency to run everywhere and damage clothes etc. Now they are available in jelly form.

The range of products and tools available to the ‘Do It Yourself’ bodywork repairer is quite amazing.

The only way to find out what is best suited to your particular needs is to have a word with your local accessory dealer or better still, visit one of the large multiple stores who stock everything from aerosol paints to power tools. It is far more convenient to get everything you need under one roof. There is nothing more annoying than to find, when you get three-quarters of the way through a job, that you need a rather minor item and have to go miles to get it.
