Car jacking is a very real threat in our country. Lock your doors as soon as you get into your car. You may think this isn’t going to deter an armed criminal but you’re wrong. They pick the easiest targets, and an open door is always easier than a locked one.

Keep your car in good running condition and make sure you have enough petrol in the tank to get you where you’re going. Don’t take the chance of getting stuck without petrol in the middle of the night on the highway, or anywhere else for that matter.

Don’t stop for hitchhikers — no matter how cute they are or how sorry you feel for them. No one is cute enough to risk your life for. And don’t hitchhike.

Never leave your keys in the car or in the ignition. Not even to just run back into the house quickly. It takes only a second for someone with criminal intent to get into your car and drive off with you watching in frustration and it will not be easy to explain to the police or, more importantly, the insurance company.

It’s advisable — although rather a schlep —to keep your car and house keys separately.

Cell phones are today’s wonder. If you’re driving alone at night, always keep your cell phone handy, preferably with an emergency number or the number of a reliable friend already keyed in so that you can just press the call activate button in an emergency.

On any long journey, tell someone what time you expect to arrive and what route you are taking.

Auto Car Accident

Breathe! Calm down, and under no circumstances take a hockey stick to hand. Regardless of the seriousness of the accident the police always needs to be notified. If the accident was a bit messy phone them straight away.

Draw a diagram of the scene before any of the cars are moved. You will be asked to do this in the police report. If no-one has been injured and you are able to move your car, do so if it’s obstructing the traffic.

Take down the details of the other driver, including full name, ID number, address, telephone number and the name of the insurance company and the car’s registration number. It may be a good idea to ask the other driver for a business card; then it’s not the end of the world if you get any details wrong in your fragile emotional state. If your car needs to be towed away, find out from your insurance company which towing companies may be used (phone them if you don’t know).

The towing guy is usually quite keen to convince you that all is well and that he is approved by your insurance company, but at the end of the day you may be faced with an exorbitant bill that your insurance company refuses to pay. Phone a friend (if you’ve not done this already) and get to the police station to report the accident. Have all your car details handy — everything that’s on the registration disc. After you have completed what may feel at the time like the Spanish Inquisition, you will be given a case number. Write it down in several places — you need it to file a claim with your insurance company.

In a serious accident and when someone is injured, don’t move the person or the car. Try to assess the person’s injuries and give first aid if you are the only person on the scene and his injuries seem life-threatening. Call for help immediately.

Auto Safety Tips

Always have an emergency number handy, either for your cell-phone service provider, local police station or simply a friend.

Inform a friend and or relative of your situation immediately.

If you find yourself in a less than safe area, stay in the car, keep all doors locked and phone that emergency number. Do not get out of the car until help arrives — regardless of what the other driver is telling you.
