How to complain about a bad Auto Parts repair

Contact the repairer, agent as soon as possible, recording the name of the person to whom you speak, his designation, the date, the vehicle’s odometer reading and the nature of your complaint. Do not delay; the longer you put off taking action the less credible your complaint becomes. If the matter is not resolved immediately, confirm your complaint in a letter addressed to the manager of the garage/franchise concern, using his name and designation. This should be followed up if necessary on a regular basis.

If the car is new, whether or not under warranty, and no satisfaction is obtained within a reasonable time, approach the service department of the vehicle manufacturer concerned, complaining of the service received from their agent, enclosing copies of correspondence with the agent. A copy of this letter should be sent to the agent.

Always complain in writing in case you have to resort to legal action, remembering to add the date and the vehicle’s odometer reading, particularly if the car is under warranty. Correspondence should be registered or delivered by hand, when a signature should be obtained to prove receipt.

A common response to a complaint is that the fault will rectify itself once a vehicle has been run in. A fault rarely rectifies itself, and must be seen to before or at the first free service—depending on the problem. Only if you have received confirmation from an independent expert, should you consider using a vehicle which has a fault, and then only if you obtain the repairer’s or seller’s written confirmation that:

  • They will repair the fault if it does not resolve itself by a specified date or distance.
  • They will pay for any damage caused through using the car.

Auto Partsgenuine, pirate or counterfeit?

Genuine and pirate parts usually come from the same source: the parts manufacturer who supplies the motor manufacturer with the original equipment. The only difference is that some go into the vehicle manufacturer’s packaging and are sold as ‘genuineparts; while the balance are packaged for independent retailers/ wholesalers and become known as ‘pirateparts. These are normally much cheaper than ‘genuine‘ counterparts, although there is no difference in quality. Sometimes non-original suppliers may make and market a part which will fit the vehicle. These ‘pirateparts may vary in quality, depending on the source of supply.

Watch out for ‘counterfeit’ parts; inferior quality components packaged under a well known brand name and fraudulently sold.

Checking Auto Parts Repairing invoices

The importance of carefully checking invoices cannot be stressed too strongly. Whenever you have repairs carried out insist on an invoice being made out immediately and in detail. Check that products or services which have not specifically been asked for do not appear on the invoice, and dispute any such charges immediately. If items have been charged for which you did not order, return the invoice and have the items concerned deleted.

Oil additives

A surprising number of motorists are still under the impression that modern motor oils are, to some extent, inadequate for efficient lubrication, and that supplementary oil additives will correct this deficiency. The truth is that ongoing research and development by car manufacturers and oil companies has resulted in oil blends which are as effective as modern technology can make them, and which contain all the additives needed to meet the stringent lubricating demands of modern high speed engines. Adding supplementary additives rarely, if ever, warrants the additional cost, and in some cases may even void the manufacturer’s warranty.
