Auto Car Maintenance Beautifying, Let it Shimmer and Shine (Scratches, Tyres, Exterior &Interior Decor)
Take pride! There is no reason why your old Beetle shouldn’t shimmer and shine as brightly as the Porsche standing next to it.
Getting rid of Auto Small Scratches
You should treat small scratches as soon as possible. They could very easily lead to rust and eventually your car may be falling apart right in front of your eyes — all because someone was careless and let her (or his) shopping trolley connect with your precious car.
You should be able to get a touch-up kit from your local dealer or garage to match the colour of your car. If you need any further instructions on how to proceed, we suggest you rather have this done by a specialist.
Auto Exterior Decor
It is advisable to give your car a good wash every few weeks. Try to get underneath as well as there might be cakes of dirt lodged in some strange places. Polish it every couple of months — this will protect the paint, help with rust prevention and keep it looking like a million bucks. Don’t neglect the rubbers around the windows, or the bumpers. There are more car-polishing products available than we care to mention, so take your pick!
Auto Tyres
Ever wonder what exactly it is about a new car that gives it that edge? It’s the shiny black tyres. You don’t need to buy a miracle tyre-shiner — simply use some black shoe-polish, and give them a good scrub. If your car is fitted with hubcaps, remove these to also give them a proper cleaning. You can soak them in a tub of dishwashing liquid or car cleaning detergent. Scrub the tyres with a brush to remove the worst of the grub, allow to dry, then apply black shoe-polish. Once you are done with the spit ‘n polish of the tyres, you may replace your new shiny hubcaps and take five minutes to admire your handywork.
Auto Interior Decor
There are quite a few brands of lovely little sprays out there that will make your car look and smell like new. Fabulous! But start by giving the inside of your car a vacuum and a good wipe every now and then. Most service stations have the self- service industrial-strength vacuum cleaners just waiting for you to come and suck away. A good tip to keep your car smelling fresh as a daisy is to buy one of those fabric softener refills that come in extra strength plastic bags. Leave it under your seat and you’ll never wonder what died in your car overnight.
Don’t get taken for an Auto Ride
If you take your car in for a regular service and the kind gentleman phones you and you receive a R17 000 quote to have your car fixed — get a second opinion, in fact get a third. We realize this sounds laborious, but when you eventually pay R2 000 to have the same car serviced (and she’s still going strongly), it all becomes worthwhile. There are mechanics and even larger and better-known service centres out there that will take you for a ride on the assumption that you don’t know any better. As you can guess, we speak from experience. We feel it is our civil duty to warn you of this danger.
There are certain measures you can take and questions you can ask when choosing a mechanic. Start by asking him to explain to you exactly what’s wrong with the car. If he’s not full of it you should have a fair understanding of the problem (even if the technical details still sound like an ancientdialect of Gondwana). If you take your car for a general servicethe garage cannot charge you for anything out of thenorm and should phone you with a quote first. If you feel even remotely uneasy about this get a second opinion. Ask friends and family, work associates and anyone you know — you should be able to find the name of a reputable mechanic somewhere alongthe way —the best ones are usually those you hear about by word of mouth.
