Auto Blistered Paint Removal
When you have got blistering paint and find that it is caused by rust coming through from the underside, then the rust really has got a grip.
You will need to use a really stiff wire brush on the underside of the rusted area to remove the dirt along with any undersealant that may be present.
Then using a coarse grade of emery paper, about 40 grade, remove the loose rust and paintwork from the outside. Keep rubbing until all you have left is bright metal with perhaps some bits of dark brown rust and holes. Do not worry about the holes. They show that the tunnels of rust coming through from the underside have been removed.
Wash both sides of the damaged area with clean water, and dry with a clean rag. Do not use old woollens as they snag on the rough holes and leave strands everywhere.
Use a chemical rust remover to deal with the remaining brown patches and leave to dry. It is preferable to use a rust removing jelly as liquids tend to run everywhere, and as most rust removers are strongly acidic this can cause all sorts of problems.
Wash the area thoroughly to remove any excess of rust remover and if the holes are small enough to be filled from the front, spray the underside with a zinc spray. If the holes are larger, patch them from the back with glass fibre and use a zinc spray after the patch has cured.
Use a filler on the paintwork side of the repair to fill in any indentations. Rub down the filler until it matches the contours of the bodywork and respray.
Sometimes a section of the bodywork becomes so honeycombed with rust that after using a wire brush you are left with something resembling lace.
