Auto accident, don’t neglect illegal victims

If the motorist who has just smashed into your car jumps out and says ‘Don’t call the police, I’ll pay for damage’, don’t take the chance.

Many victims of minor — but not inexpensive — accidents leave the scene after receiving verbal assurance that the other party will pay, but the result of their folly can often be seen at courts. The driver may seem sincere enough but his keenness to keep the police away, or reluctance to produce a licence or sign a statement of facts, may be bad news. He could be unlicensed, trying to avoid being charged over the incident or could have been drinking. If the other driver isn’t charged and later denies making any promises, you may have great difficulty proving who was at fault. What may have been a friendly gesture towards another driver could put you deeply in debt. As someone once quipped: ‘Verbal contracts are not worth the paper they are written on’.
