Air filter: The device that traps dirt and dust to keep it from entering the carburetor.
Alternator:The device that operates electrical accessories and keeps the battery charged.
Antifreeze: The common name for ethylene glycol, a chemical which, when mixed with water, is used as an engine coolant.
Battery: The device that stores electrical energy.
Carburetor: The device that vaporizes fuel and mixes it with air to form a combustible mixture.
Choke: The device in the carburetor that reduces the air and increases the fuel in the air/fuel mixture to help start a cold engine.
Compressor: A device that increases the pressure, density, and temperature of a gas or liquid by forcing it into a smaller space.
Condenser: The part of an air conditioning system, similar to a radiator, that cools the hot, high-pressure gas in the system.
Crankshaft: The main rotating shaft in the engine that transmits power from the pistons to the transmission.
Cylinder: A hole in the engine block in which a piston travels up and down.
Dipstick: A metal rod used to measure the levels of oil, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.
Distributor: The part of the ignition system that distributes high voltage to each spark plug in sequence at the proper time.
Distributor cap: The cover on the distributor. The distributor cap has a tower for each plug wire and a center tower where the coil wire enters to carry electrical current to the rotor.
Electrolyte: The mixture of sulfuric acid and water that produces voltage and conducts electrical current in lead-acid batteries.
Evaporator: The part of the air conditioning system in which the refrigerant vaporizes into gas-absorbing heat and a fan blows cold air into the passenger compartment.
Firewall: The metal partition separating the passenger compartment from the engine compartment.
Flasher: A device that automatically interrupts the flow of electrical current, causing signal lights to blink on and off.
Flooded: The condition that occurs in the engine when the cylinders receive straight gas or a mixture of air and fuel that is too rich to burn.
Fuel filter: The device in the fuel line that removes dirt and other contaminants from the fuel before it enters the carburetor.
Fuel pump: The mechanical or electrical device that transfers fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor.
Fuse: A safety device that protects an electrical circuit against overloads.
Gasket: A layer of material placed between two surfaces to provide a tight seal.
